Spent most of the day configuring my Web Server that I am running through Digital Ocean. Which is a great hosting provider just to let anyone who was wondering what hosting service they should go through for a VPS (Virtual Private Server). I honestly am constantly surprised to how well this web server is performing. I own two of servers through Digital Ocean and none of them have failed to appease their general purpose, that being a web server and hosting websites from. It's been a great learning experience trying to configure multiple websites through one "droplet" they call it on their site. As well as tinkering with other server based OS's to get a better understanding of the different ways to go about doing the same thing. I believe it honestly depends on both your first experience with Linux and what distro popped your cherry so to speak. For me it was Ubuntu and from that moment on I have forever been using Ubuntu as my server from the day I started using Linux in my daily life. It's been an interesting journey through Linux and honestly I didn't know how to handle trying to learn so many different distro's but I honestly always go back to a Debian based Linux distro. For my Desktop/Laptop preference I will always be a Linux Mint fan since for some weird reason Ubuntu on the desktop has been ruined for me once they implemented their own Desktop Environment Unity. I was born and raised on GNOME so seeing clones such as Cinnamon and MATE have always made Linux Mint my go to for the Desktop and Laptop end of things. For the server side I will always be a Ubuntu fanatic so to speak. The main reason being that was the first server OS that I was introduced to and learned how to manage back when I was in High School. Leading me to the supposed career that I have today in Web Development and hosting Linux has carried me from being a basic GUI user to a powerhouse of a terminal user. Though I will not say I have completely mastered the Linux Bash side of things but that will happen as time carries on. I have already become familiar with most UNIX based commands. Which makes managing Linux and Mac OS X a breeze. Though Mac OS X, really bro? You had to be different when it comes to the naming structure of devices. Always baffles me whenever I type in ifconfig on a Mac OS X terminal to see en0. But that's besides the point most of today was spent on learning new things about WordPress and implementing it into my server so I can help some dude I met on Reddit perfect his WordPress Brewery Review site. It's been interesting learning how permissions can fuck up the entire backend of things but I'm not complaining as long as I can build something cool. Never used a premium theme in WordPress before but it's interesting seeing how it interacts with the basic WordPress install and what Plug-ins and knowledge is required to build a site from it. From what I am experiencing in this particular theme that we are using for this site, Bridge, it uses jQuery which makes me even more tempted to simply drop everything and pick up a book on jQuery to build some truly dynamic and responsive websites. Since everyone is browsing the internet and porn to their tablet and smart phones now. Honestly though I would love to see some more web development go into those really basic web browser flip phones. I think it would be interesting to see what kind of sites can be developed to perform on those kind of phones. Since there is now more availability than ever to access those phones through those cheap prepaid phones you can get from a Ralph's or Walmart I think more people should be developing stuff for those machines. But then again, this is America and who want's to create stuff for poor people? I do :D
